| This years edition of the festival proposes three threads to be unravelled and interwoven. The first, //**Shades of Grey Literature**// is an invitation to discover, play and worry about the numerous documents, commentaries and traces which organise electronic communication in the background. A mass of anonymous documents (licenses, conditions, specifications, guidelines and standards) secures the uninterrupted flow of information. Ubiquitous Grey literature radiates out from the margins and regulates the relationship between machines and humans. | The second, //**The life and nature of data**// is an exploration of the question: What is data? To who or what is it handed over or where does it come form? Each electronic transaction leaves a trace of raw data, but raw for one, is like petrol for another: profiling of users is done in the interest of marketeers and advertisers, for state surveillance or to control the workplace; different practices all based on the extraction of information from data. In the form of games, statistical manipulation and discussion, V/J12 tries to decode and put its finger on the issues that weigh on the registrations that are stored in logs and databases. | | Door de 12e editie van het festival lopen drie rode draden. De eerste, //**In de schaduw van Grijze literatuur**//, gaat over de veelheid van documenten, commentaren, sporen die vaak onzichtbaar vanuit de marges en op de achtergrond onze electronisch communicatie-verkeer organizeren. Toegang wordt georganiseerd door een laag van anonieme documenten (licenties, condities, specificaties, richtlijnen en standaarden). Om een ononderbroken communicatie-flow te garanderen stellen we conventies, protocollen en permissies op. Grijze literatuur is overal in de electronische marges aanwezig en regelt de relatie tussen machines en mensen, en kadert hoe mensen zich via netwerken tot elkaar verhouden. Wie heeft het recht te lezen, schrijven, uit te voeren? |

| | De tweede: //**De aard en het bestaan van data**// ontleedt de vraag: //Wat is data? Waar wordt data aan gegeven of vandaan gehaald?// Elke elektronische transactie laat rauwe data sporen na, maar wat onbewerkt en ruw voor de één is, vormt voedsel voor de ander: gebruikersprofielen worden opgesteld in het belang van marketeers en adverteerders, voor staatscontrole of om de werkvloer te surveilleren zijn voorbeelden van gangbare praktijken die zich baseren op het extraheren van informatie uit ruwe data. V/J12 legt haar vinger op de onderwerpen die gevoelige data en probeert te de omgang et logs en databases te decoderen middels spel, theatralisatie, visualisatie en manipulatie van statistische info. Gaandeweg ontrafelen we dat raadselachtige fenomeen 'data': altijd klaar om te muteren, zich te vermenigvuldigen, nooit trouw aan haar herkomst. |

| | De derde rode draad: //**Performatieve Instructies**// kijkt naar codes en normen die zichzelf en anderen in beweging zetten. Hoe wisselen gebruikers en ontwikkelaars informatie uit middels bugreports en foutmeldingen? Hoe worden verantwoordelijkheden en hiërarchiën verdeeld in verschillende werk-omgevingen middels handleidingen, recepten, formulieren en andere vormen van instructie? |
