Work on tools – body and software extended: How might we conceive of knowledge as a bodily phenomenon, and what are the social and political implications of doing so?
tools related to professional practice: how do they define practice and vice versa
History of practice in tools / software history
Two parallel paths: video (cinelerra / lumiera) and lay-out (scribus)
Contributing to software development “filing meta bugs”
Collaborations between programmers and designers / artists.
Overcoming the User – Developer divide
Interstitiele praktijken: Sharing labour vs. dividing labour.
Interdisciplinarity 2.0
Critical practice: Constant as a space for developing a kind of practice that is engaging with questions about the place and meaning of technology: how it is made, what it makes us do. Not standing back but testing alternatives, developing them.
Not about products (but not only the process matters?).
process, not procedure.
It is not about a how to do something – skill is an investigation.
The boat that is rebuilt while at open sea.
Richard Sennett: “History has drawn fault-lines between practice and theory, technique and expression, craftsman and artist, maker and user; and modern society suffers from this.”
“Not problem solving, but problem finding. Every solution should open new problems. Laboratories that work on wrong answers. Get as many right answers as you can.”
Degrading when competition mixes with skill ? It is better to be 'good enough' and not perfect. Than we are able to let go of our own 'children'. Being skilled is not RIGHT but a humane way, as well as we can, and we can judge whether it is good enough. Mentoring: how do you enable someone else to become better at something.
Performing practice
“When he appears on the stage, besides what he actually is doing he will at all essential points discover, specify, imply what he is not doing; that is to say he will act in such a way that the alternative emerges as clearly as possible, that his acting allows the other possibilities to be inferred and only represents one out of the possible variants” (Berthold Brecht: Short Description of a New Technique of Acting Which Produces an Alienation Effect)
